What is Mediation

complex problem

Mediation is a process by which two or more parties who are in dispute meet together in the presence of an independent third party (the Mediator).  The Mediator may use specific techniques to facilitate discussion and help the parties arrive at an agreement that is acceptable to both.

It is important to note that the Mediator cannot impose a solution to the problem on the parties, and in this respect has a different role to that of a judge or an arbitrator.

One advantage which mediaton has over other proceedings is that a session can usually be arranged quickly, and is ;usually substantially cheaper than, for example, litigation. Most mediations last no longer than one day, and it is not unusual for a session to conclude in two - three hours.
